Universität Karlsruhe (TH)
The University of Karlsruhe is among the
oldest institutions which offer engineering education in Germany. Among
its famous students were Heinrich Hertz, Carl Benz, Nobel Prize winner
Fritz Haber, Emil Skoda and many others. Following its tradition of
excellence, it was the first university to establish a department of
computer science, which is still the largest one in Germany and
continuously ranked as the top one. 19.1% of the students come from
abroad. Other areas of important research today are in
superconductivity, robotics, mechatronics, communications and
nanostructures. The University of Karlsruhe houses eight centers of
excellence in research and is a partner in five others. Close
cooperation and interaction with the Karlsruhe Research Center, the
Computer Science Research Center, the Center for Environmental Research,
several state and federal research centers and with the Fraunhofer
Institutes, along with seven other institutions of higher education,
provide a unique environment for study and research and make the
Karlsruhe region the one with the highest density of researchers in
Germany.
