Call for Papers

The Semantic Web Mining workshop is a follow-up to last year's workshop at ECML/PKDD, the first workshop on that topic at a large international conference. Our intention to bring together researchers and practitioners from the two fast-developing research areas Semantic Web and Web Mining has resulted in a very successful workshop. The goal of this year's workshop is to continue and extend this sucessful start.

In the workshop, we want to discuss the use of XML, RDF, ontologies, and logics for the three web mining areas; and the support of web mining techniques for building (XML and RDF) schemes and ontologies. Recent advances in Web site design that pay increasing attention to the need for a clear semantic structure underlying the information architecture of a site, have prepared the ground for both broader and deeper applications of semantic mining technologies. Similarly, new developments in mining such as the increasing analysis of usage information for personalising Web sites, pose new challenges for semantic encodings of Web resources.

There are quite a number of people from different communities that approach the field of Semantic Web Mining from different, interesting angles. The goal of the workshop is to establish and enhance communiction between these communities.

Submission Information

Authors will be asked to place their contributions in relation to the following, overarching, stages of the Semantic Web Mining process. This will help to structure the workshop and intensify discussion and exchange between the different approaches:

• Mining for Building the Semantic Web
• Exploiting Semantics for Web Mining
• Mining the Semantic Web
• Closing the Loop: How do the three previous topics interact?

Subtopics include, but are not limited to:

• Web Usage, Content, and Structure Mining for Discovering Semantics
• Concept Taxonomies (e. g. product hierarchies) and Web Mining
• Using the Syntactic Layer (XML) for Semantic Web Mining
• Using the Vocabulary Layer (e. g. RDF-Schema) for Semantic Web Mining
• Using the Logical Layer (e. g. Description Logics/OIL) for Semantic Web Mining
• User Profiling, Segmentation and Interpretation with Background Knowledge
• Using Background Knowledge for Web Mining
• Metadata-based Text Mining
• Text Mining for Creating Metadata
• Learning Taxonomies and Ontologies from the Web
• Metadata Harvesting
• Information Extraction with Machine Learning
• Applications of Semantic Web Mining

We also encourage submissions which relate research results from other areas (e.g., relational data mining, information retrieval, knowledge representation) to the workshop topics.

Persons interested in participating should submit either a technical paper (less than 6000 words) or a position paper (less than 1500 words) addressing new research issues. In addition, we solicit proposals for panel discussions. Submit before May 24, 2002 in electronic form (strongly preferred!) in postscript or pdf to: hotho@aifb.uni-karlsruhe.de. Although not required for the initial submission, we recommend to use the Springer's LNCS format, as this will be the required format for accepted papers.

People who want to attend the workshop have to be registered to the main conference ECML/PKDD-2002. Workshop proceedings will be distributed among registered participants at the workshop. The conference will probably provide a joint paper style for the proceedings. In addition, there will be a joint Web-publication of all the workshop proceedings after the conference. Hence, electronic submissions to the workshops are strongly encouraged.
