Objectives Top

Semantic Web is a major international research effort with the goal to make web content available for intelligent knowledge processing. It draws on standard and novel techniques from various disciplines within Computer Science, including Knowledge Management, Artificial Intelligence, Databases, Internet Technology, Software Agents, eCommerce, etc. The methods and tools developed and integrated for this purpose – often called Semantic Technologies – are generic and have a very large application potential outside the domain of the Semantic Web.

Such applications are currently being investigated in various disciplines within Computer Science, including Ambient Intelligence, Software Engineering, Cognitive Systems, Corporate Intranets, Knowledge Management, Bioinformatics, etc. We believe that Semantic Technologies provide methods and tools which will persist in these and other application areas for the foreseeable future.

This event is supported by KnowledgeWeb NeOn X-Media IME SmartWeb

Massimo Paolucci, NTT DoCoMo, Munich, Germany:
Mobile Phones go Semantic: Why we need semantics to provision mobile services

Mobile phones are becoming the platforms on which services that are very important for our life will be delivered. Indeed, mobile phones can already be used to pay for parking, to store train and bus tickets, to check in on flights, they are payment devices, and they may already notify us when it is time to go to take plane or of a change in the plane schedule. But while services for mobile phones are growing they are usually very hardcoded and information does not flow from service to service. Paradoxically, a navigation system on the phone will not interact with the address list, and a ticket delivered to the phone will be stored in some inbox queue rather than in the agenda. The semantic web and logic reasoning have the tools to address these problems, because they provide the flexibility to lower the interoperability barriers and support information flow between applications at degrees not seen so far. Furthermore, inferences based on context to figure out what services to offer, or privacy control are coming in greater need. In the talk I will highlight a vision for mobile computing that may become reality in the near future, and I will highlight some opportunities for real world use of the Semantic Web.
