Semantic Web Assistant

The Semantic Web Assistant was created as part of a thesis submitted to the department of computer science at the University of Applied Sciences Bonn-Rhein-Sieg in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the german degree of Diplom-Informatiker (FH). The thesis explores the possibilities of a combination of Semantic Web technologies with production rule systems for letting end-users discover some of the powerful applications of the SemanticWeb on their desktop.

The thesis describes some sample applications of such a system and defines requirements and a basic architecture. The Semantic Web Assistant was developed during the 3-month editing time of the thesis as a first prototype implementing these specifications. It was built on top of the Jena Semantic Web Framework.

The idea behind the system was developed because of the lack of real world applications for the Semantic Web, that do not focus on one very specific domain. This lack is at least partly responsible for the slow adoption of the new Semantic Web technologies on the World Wide Web.
